The William C. Boydell House is a special building in Midtown Detroit, Michigan. It's a large house that was actually built for two families to live in, like two homes joined together! This historic house, located at 4614 Cass Avenue, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982 because of its important history and beautiful design.
History of the Boydell House
William C. Boydell was born in 1849 in Staffordshire, England. When he was young, his family moved to London, Ontario, in Canada. Five years later, they moved again to Detroit, Michigan, where William went to school.
In 1865, William started working as a clerk at a paint company. Just two years later, in 1867, William and his older brother John decided to start their own business. They created the Boydell Brothers White Lead and Color Company. William was the vice-president of this new company. The Boydell family owned this company for a very long time, until 1959.
In 1895, William Boydell had this unique double house built. It was designed by an architect named Almon Clother Varney. William lived in this house until he passed away in 1902.
Design of the Boydell House
The William C. Boydell House is a three-story building made of brick and limestone. It was designed in the Beaux-Arts style, which is a grand and classical way of building. Even though it's a double house (meaning two homes), it looks like one big, fancy family home from the outside.
At the front of the house, there are two stone patios with rough, natural-looking stones. These patios line the front of the building. To make the two parts of the house look like one, there's a decorative brick band just below the roof. Also, the first floor has strips of limestone decoration, adding to its elegant appearance. The roof is a "hip roof," which means it slopes down on all four sides.
