Early Life and Education
William Blest was born in Sligo, Ireland, in 1800. His parents, Anna Maiben and Albert Blest, made sure their children received a good education.
He studied medicine at Trinity College in Dublin. Later, he continued his studies at the University of Edinburgh. He earned his doctorate in medicine on March 21, 1821.
After finishing his studies, William Blest moved to London to work as a doctor. However, there were too many doctors in London at that time. His brother, Andrew Blest, told him that Chile offered great opportunities for doctors. So, William Blest decided to move to Valparaíso, Chile, in 1823.
On March 21, 1827, he married María de la Luz Gana Darrigrandi. Her family was wealthy, and her sister was married to Manuel Blanco Encalada. This helped Dr. Blest set up his own medical practice in Chile.
Making Medicine Better in Chile
After living in Chile for three years, Dr. Blest wrote an important essay in 1826. It was called "Observations about the present state of Medicine in Chile and a proposal for its improvement." In this essay, he pointed out the poor health conditions and the lack of good medical education in Chile.
His report had a big impact right away. That same year, the government created the Chilean Medical Society. This group included all the doctors in Santiago de Chile, and Dr. Blest became its first leader.
In 1827, the government made some changes again. They replaced the Medical Society with the General Medical Inspectorate. Dr. Blest was named its Chief Inspector. He continued to lead many medical organizations as they changed over the years.
In 1830, a system called the Protomedicario was brought back permanently. Dr. William Blest was put in charge of it. From then on, he was responsible for almost everything related to medicine in Chile. He approved licenses for doctors and inspected hospitals and pharmacies. This power meant he had many supporters, but also some people who disagreed with him.
Starting a Medical School
Dr. Blest often spoke about how important it was to study medicine properly. He published an "Essay on the most common causes of illnesses suffered in Chile." This made him a leading figure among Chilean doctors.
Because of his efforts, he was chosen to create and open the first School of Medicine in Chile. This school started in 1833 at the National Institute, operating from the Hospital of Saint John of God. Dr. Blest was the director of this school for twenty years.
