William Hugh Elliot-Murray-Kynynmound, also known as the 3rd Earl of Minto, was an important British politician. He was born on March 19, 1814, and passed away on March 17, 1891. He was part of a political group called the Whigs.

He was the oldest son of Gilbert Elliot-Murray-Kynynmound, 2nd Earl of Minto. From his birth in 1814 until 1859, he was known by the title Viscount Melgund.

Early Life and Education

William went to two well-known schools. He studied at Eton and then at Trinity College, Cambridge. These were important places for education in Britain.

His Time as a Politician

William became a Member of Parliament (MP). An MP is someone elected to represent people in the country's government.

  • In May 1837, he was first elected as an MP for Hythe. He kept this role until the 1841 election.
  • At the 1847 election, he was elected again. This time, he represented Greenock until the 1852 election.
  • He was elected one more time in the 1857 election for Clackmannanshire and Kinross-shire. He did not run for election again in 1859.

Honors and Later Years

In 1870, William received a special award. He was made a Knight of the Thistle. This is a very old and important honor given in Scotland. He died in 1891 when he was 76 years old, just two days before his 77th birthday.

Family

William married Emma, who was the daughter of General Sir Thomas Hislop, 1st Baronet. They had children, including William and Gilbert Elliot-Murray-Kynynmound, 4th Earl of Minto.
