William Eure, the 2nd Baron Eure, was an important English nobleman who lived a long time ago, during the Tudor period (1529-1594). He was a soldier and worked as an official in the border areas between England and Scotland, known as the Scottish Marches.
A Young Nobleman's Start
William Eure was born on May 10, 1529. His father was named Ralph Eure. William's grandfather, also named William Eure, became the 1st Baron Eure in 1544. This meant he was given a special title by the King.
Sadly, William's father died in a battle in 1545. This made young William the next in line to inherit his grandfather's important title. In 1563, he was given big jobs as the Vice-Admiral for the coasts of County Durham and Yorkshire. A Vice-Admiral was like a senior naval officer in charge of a specific coastal area.
Life on the Scottish Border
Just like his father and grandfather, William Eure spent much of his life near the border between England and Scotland. This area was called the Scottish Marches. It was a busy and sometimes dangerous place.
Before 1557, William became the Captain of Berwick Castle. This was a very important castle right on the border. He worked with another nobleman, Thomas Wharton, in this role.
In 1570, William Eure served under the Earl of Sussex during an invasion of Scotland. Later, in 1587, he was sent with the Earl of Rutland to talk with Scottish leaders. Their job was to try and make a peace treaty between the two countries.
William Eure's Family Life
When William Eure was just 11 years old, it was planned for him to marry Mary Darcy. She was only 4 years old at the time! However, after 1544, William decided not to go through with this marriage.
Instead, he married Margaret Dymoke. Her father was Edward Dymoke, who held the special title of "Champion of England." William and Margaret had a large family. They had five sons and six daughters.
Their children included:
- Ralph Eure (1558–1593/4): He became the 3rd Baron Eure after his father.
- Francis Eure (around 1564–1621): He became a Member of Parliament (MP) for Scarborough.
- William Eure (1585/6–1628/9): He also became an MP for Scarborough.
- Charles Eure: There were two sons named Charles. One died young, and the other lived past 1598.
- Anne Eure: She married Sir John Mallory.
- Meriol Eure: She married Sir Richard Goodricke.
- Martha Eure: She married William Armyne.
- Mary Eure
- Margaret Eure
- Elizabeth Eure
Margaret Eure, William's wife, passed away in 1591. William Eure himself died a few years later, on September 12, 1594. He was buried the next day. His eldest son, Ralph, inherited his title and became the 3rd Baron Eure.
