William Christie Gosse (born in 1842 – died August 12, 1881) was an important explorer. An explorer is someone who travels to new and unknown places to discover them. William Gosse was born in Hertfordshire, England. When he was eight years old, he moved to Adelaide, Australia with his father in 1850.

Exploring Central Australia

William Gosse became one of the first Europeans to explore the middle part of central Australia. This was a very challenging journey because the land was vast and often dry.

Discovering Uluru

On July 19, 1873, Gosse made a famous discovery. He was the first European to see the giant rock formation known today as Uluru. He named it Ayers Rock. He chose this name to honor Sir Henry Ayers, who was a very important government official in South Australia at the time.

Race to the West

During this time, many explorers were trying to find new paths across Australia. The building of the Overland Telegraph Line had opened up new areas for exploration. Another explorer named Ernest Giles was also trying to find a way to the west. Giles did not succeed on his first try. However, Gosse was able to follow Giles's original path and complete the journey.

Later Life and Death

William Gosse became sick after his long and difficult journeys. He sadly died from a heart attack on August 12, 1881. He was only 38 years old.
