William Henry Barbour Jr. (born February 4, 1941 – died January 8, 2021) was an important judge in the United States. He served on the United States District Court for the Southern District of Mississippi.
Early Life and School
William Barbour Jr. was born in Yazoo City, a town in Mississippi. He went to Princeton University and earned a degree in 1963. Later, he studied law at the University of Mississippi School of Law, finishing in 1966.
His Career
After finishing law school, Barbour went back to Mississippi. He worked at his family's law firm in Yazoo City from 1966 to 1983. He also helped young people as a counselor for the Yazoo County Youth Court from 1971 to 1982.
Becoming a Federal Judge
In 1983, President Ronald Reagan chose William Barbour Jr. to become a judge. He was approved by the United States Senate and officially became a judge on April 25, 1983.
He later became the Chief Judge for the Southern District of Mississippi, serving in that role from 1989 to 1996. In 2006, he took on a special role called senior status. This meant he was still a federal judge, but he handled fewer cases. He fully retired from hearing cases in 2019.
Family Life
William Barbour Jr. was related to Haley Barbour. Haley Barbour was his cousin and also a former law partner. Haley Barbour later became the Governor of Mississippi.
His Passing
William Barbour Jr. passed away on January 8, 2021, at his home in Yazoo City, Mississippi.
