The William H. Harvey House is a really old and special house in Windsor, Connecticut. It stands at 1173 Windsor Avenue. This house was built in 1868. It's a great example of a building style called Italianate architecture. The house is made mostly of brick. Because it's so important, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.

What Does the House Look Like?

The William H. Harvey House is in the southern part of Windsor. You can find it at the corner of Windsor Avenue and Hillcrest Road. Windsor Avenue is a main road that goes north and south.

House Design and Features

The house has two floors. It has a flat roof and walls made of brick. The roof edges stick out quite a bit from the walls. This is a common feature in Italianate homes.

The front of the house has three main sections, called bays. The front door is on the right side. A small porch with a flat roof covers the entrance. The door has special windows on the sides and above it. There are also decorative columns next to the door.

The windows on the first floor are tall and long. The windows on the second floor are a normal size. All the windows have sills and tops made of brownstone. On the sides of the house, there are small windows up near the roof. A two-story brick section extends from the back of the main house.

History of the Harvey House

The William H. Harvey House was built around 1868. It was built for a man named William Harvey. He was a local merchant who sold tobacco.

Who Was William Harvey?

William Harvey was an important person in Windsor. He owned the house for many years. His family continued to own the house until at least the middle of the 1900s.

Italianate Style in Windsor

This house is one of only a few Italianate-style homes left in Windsor. This makes it a special part of the town's history. The Italianate style was popular in the United States from about 1840 to 1885. It was inspired by Italian Renaissance villas.
