William Sydney Halliley (born February 7, 1888 – died September 6, 1963) was an English cricketer. He also served as an officer in the British Army and the British Indian Army. He was awarded the Military Cross for his bravery.

Early Life and Education

William Halliley was born in British Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) in February 1888. He later moved to England for his education. He attended Eastbourne College, a school in England. After college, he went to the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. This is a famous military academy where people train to become army officers.

Cricket Career

After finishing his training at Sandhurst, Halliley played first-class cricket. This is the highest level of cricket played in a country. He played for the Europeans cricket team in British India. He played three matches for them before the First World War. He played twice against the Parsees and once against the Muslims.

He also played one more first-class match for a team called J. G. Greig's XI. In this game, he played against the Hindus in 1912. William Halliley was a bowler. He took 7 wickets in his four first-class matches. His average was 18.71 runs per wicket. In one game against the Parsees in August 1912, he took 5 wickets for 70 runs. This is called a five wicket haul and is a great achievement for a bowler.

Military Service

William Halliley had a long military career. He first joined the Royal Warwickshire Regiment as a second lieutenant in 1908. He became a lieutenant in 1910 but left the army in 1913.

First World War Service

When the First World War started, Halliley returned to the army. He joined the Indian Army Reserve of Officers in December 1914. He served with the 7th Rajput's regiment. In October 1916, he received the Military Cross. This award is given for bravery during battle.

He was injured in 1916 and became a prisoner of war. This happened after the fall of Kut in April 1916, when his forces were captured by the Ottoman Empire. Towards the end of the war, he was promoted to captain in August 1918.

Post-War and Later Service

After the First World War, Halliley joined the regular Indian Army. However, he retired from the Indian Army in August 1923. He returned to serve again during the Second World War.

William Halliley passed away in Pembury, England, in September 1963.
