William Hay, 6th Lord Hay of Yester (died 1591) was an important Scottish nobleman and a member of the royal court. A nobleman was a person from a high-ranking family, and a courtier was someone who attended the king or queen.

William Hay was the son of William Hay, 5th Lord Hay of Yester and Margaret Kerr. His family was well-known in Scotland.

He became the Lord Hay of Yester in 1586 after his father passed away. This meant he inherited his father's title and lands. He was also known by the interesting nickname "Wood-Sword."

A Disagreement and Imprisonment

In 1587, William Hay had a big disagreement, often called a "feud," with Sir John Stewart of Traquair. Because of this conflict, William Hay was sent to prison in Edinburgh Castle.

He passed away in 1591. After his death, his brother, James Hay, 7th Lord Hay of Yester, became the next Lord Hay of Yester.

His Family Life

William Hay married Mary Maxwell, who was the daughter of John Maxwell, Lord Herries of Terregles. Together, they had several children:
