John Stewart of Traquair facts for kids
John Stewart of Traquair (died 1591) was an important Scottish landowner. He inherited the family lands from his older brother, Robert Stewart of Traquair. His home was the historic Traquair House near Innerleithen.
John Stewart was a Protestant and supported the Scottish Reformation, a big change in Scotland's religious history.
Serving the Queen
John Stewart played a role in the court of Mary, Queen of Scots. He was the Captain of her Royal Guard, which meant he was in charge of protecting the Queen and her husband, Lord Darnley.
In December 1562, Mary, Queen of Scots, showed her trust in him. She sent a royal messenger, Adam MacCulloch, to Hermitage Castle. The messenger's job was to demand that the castle be given over to John Stewart of Traquair. This shows he was a trusted figure to the Queen.
He also accompanied Mary, Queen of Scots, and Lord Darnley on their journey to Seton Palace and Dunbar Castle after a significant event at the palace.
Family and Later Life
John Stewart had a disagreement with his relative, William Hay, 6th Lord Hay of Yester, in 1587. This kind of disagreement between families was called a "feud" back then. Because of this feud, Lord Hay was held in Edinburgh Castle.
John Stewart married Jonet Ker, and they had children together.
He passed away on 18 April 1591. After his death, his younger brother, William Stewart of Caverston, inherited the Traquair lands. Later, another brother, James Stewart, took over.
John Stewart's grandson, also named John Stewart, became a very important person. He was known as John Stewart, 1st Earl of Traquair.
