The Marquess of Tweeddale is a special title in the Peerage of Scotland. This title was created in 1694 for the 2nd Earl of Tweeddale. A "peerage" is a system of titles like Duke, Marquess, Earl, Viscount, and Baron, often passed down through families.

The person holding the Marquess of Tweeddale title also has several other important titles. These include Earl of Tweeddale (created in 1646), Earl of Gifford (1694), Viscount of Walden (1694), and Lord Hay of Yester (1488). All these are part of the Peerage of Scotland.

There is also a title called Baron Tweeddale, which was created in 1881. This one is part of the Peerage of the United Kingdom. This meant that from 1881 to 1963, the person holding this title could sit in the House of Lords in the UK Parliament.

The oldest son of the Marquess of Tweeddale uses "Viscount Walden" as a "courtesy title." This means it's a title used out of tradition, but it's not an official peerage title until they inherit the main title.

The Marquess of Tweeddale also holds the title of Hereditary Chamberlain of Dunfermline. This is a traditional role, meaning it's passed down through the family, and it involves duties related to the historic city of Dunfermline.

The family's historic home was Yester House. It is located near Gifford in East Lothian, Scotland.

The Current Marquess

The current Marquess is Charles David Montagu Hay, the 14th Marquess of Tweeddale. He was born on August 6, 1947.

He is the son of the 12th Marquess and his wife, Sonia Mary Peake. He studied at Milton Abbey School and Trinity College, Oxford.

On February 1, 2005, he inherited all the family titles. These include Marquess of Tweeddale, Earl of Tweeddale, Baron Tweeddale of Yester, Earl of Gifford, Viscount of Walden, and Lord Hay of Yester.

Who Will Inherit the Title?

The person next in line to inherit the titles is called the "heir presumptive." For the current Marquess, his heir presumptive is his brother, Lord Alistair Hay (born 1955).

Lord Alistair Hay's heir presumptive is his half-brother, Lord Andrew Arthur George Hay (born 1959). Lord Andrew's son, Angus David George Hay (born 1991), is his "heir apparent," meaning he is directly next in line after his father.

Coat of Arms

The Coat of Arms is a special design that represents the family. It changes slightly as the family's titles grow.
