John Hay, 1st Lord Hay of Yester (born around 1450 – died after October 1508) was an important Scottish noble. He is known as the ancestor of the Marquesses of Tweeddale, a famous Scottish family. King James III of Scotland made him a Lord of Parliament on January 29, 1488. This meant he became a powerful member of the Scottish Parliament.

Early Life and Family

John Hay was born in a place called Peebleshire in Scotland. His father was Sir David Hay, who owned land in Locherworth and later in Yester, East Lothian. His mother was Elizabeth. She was the daughter of George Douglas, 1st Earl of Angus, a very important noble. Elizabeth's mother was Princess Mary, who was the daughter of King Robert III of Scotland. This means John Hay had royal connections through his mother's side of the family!

Marriages and Children

John Hay was married twice during his life. His first wife was Mary, who passed away around 1467. She was the daughter of John Lindsay, 1st Lord Lindsay.

Later, before December 17, 1468, he married his second wife, Elizabeth. She was the daughter of George Cunningham of Belton. Elizabeth lived until 1529.

John Hay had children from both of his marriages.

Children from his First Marriage

  • Sir Thomas Hay, who was known as the Master of Yester. He died in 1491. Thomas married Elizabeth, who later married James Hamilton, 1st Earl of Arran.
  • Isabel, who married Sir Walter Ker of Cessford.
