William Henry Palmer (born October 9, 1835, died July 14, 1926) was an important officer in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. He served in the famous Army of Northern Virginia.

William Henry Palmer's Early Life and War Service

William Henry Palmer was born in Richmond, Virginia. Before the Civil War began, he worked as a merchant in his hometown.

Joining the Confederate Army

When the American Civil War started in 1861, Palmer joined the army. He began as a private soldier in the First Virginia Infantry Regiment.

Rising Through the Ranks

During the war, Palmer quickly showed his skills. At the Battle of Williamsburg, he was already a Major. When his colonel was hurt, Palmer bravely took command of the regiment. He was also shot in the arm during this battle.

In October 1862, Palmer joined the team of Confederate General A.P. Hill. He became a trusted aide to General Hill.

An Accidental Injury

Palmer was with General Hill during the Battle of Chancellorsville. In this battle, he suffered a dislocated shoulder. This injury happened during a "friendly fire" incident. This was the same event that sadly wounded General Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson, who later died from his injuries.

Palmer stayed with General Hill for the rest of the war. He eventually became the chief of staff for the Third Corps of the Army of Northern Virginia. This was a very important job.

After the War: A New Chapter

General Hill died on April 2, 1865. After this, Palmer served as an Assistant Adjutant-General for General James Longstreet. Soon after, the war ended. Palmer was released from service at Appomattox.

Life After the Civil War

After the war ended, William Henry Palmer returned to his home in Richmond, Virginia. He started a new career in business.

A Successful Businessman

Palmer became the president of an insurance company. He also worked as a banker. He lived a long life, passing away in 1926 at the age of 90. He was buried in Richmond's Hollywood Cemetery.
