Early Life and War Service

William Henry Young was born on August 11, 1845, in Woodville, Mississippi. When he was about seven years old, in 1852, his family moved to St. Helena Parish, Louisiana.

During the American Civil War, which was fought from 1861 to 1865, William Henry Young joined the Union Army. He was part of the 4th Wisconsin Volunteer Cavalry Regiment. He started as a regular soldier, known as an enlisted man. Through his service, he showed great skill and leadership, eventually earning the rank of first lieutenant. This meant he was an officer in charge of a group of soldiers.

His Time in Politics

After his time in the military, William Henry Young became involved in politics. In 1885, he was elected as a member of the Wisconsin State Assembly. The Assembly is a part of Wisconsin's state government where laws are made.

Besides serving in the state government, Young also held important roles in the city of Oconto, Wisconsin. He was an alderman, which is like a city council member who helps make decisions for the city. He also served as the Mayor of Oconto, leading the city's government. William Henry Young was a member of the Republican Party.
