Kids Encyclopedia Facts

William I, Earl of Ross (Gaelic: Uilleam; died 1274) was an important leader in northern Scotland. He ruled a large area called Ross. He played a big part in Scotland taking back lands that were controlled by Norway.

Who Was William I?

William I was the son of Ferquhard, Earl of Ross. We know he was active as early as 1232. He became the Earl of Ross around the year 1251. This meant he became the main ruler of the Ross region.

Taking Charge

After his father, Ferquhard, passed away, William took over. He became a powerful figure in Scotland. His time as Earl was very important for the country.

Fighting for Scotland

William I was a key person in Scotland's efforts to reclaim the Hebrides. These islands had been under the control of Norway for a long time. William was one of the first Scottish leaders to push for these lands to be returned to Scotland.

What Happened in 1262?

A famous historical book from Norway, called Hákonar saga Hákonarsonar, tells us about William's actions. It says that in the summer of 1262, news reached Norway from the Hebrides. The news reported that the Earl of Ross and other Scots had caused a lot of trouble. They went to the Isle of Skye, burned towns and churches, and harmed many people. The book also mentioned that the Scottish king wanted to take control of all the Hebrides.

William's attacks on the Norwegian-held islands made King Haakon of Norway very angry. King Haakon planned a large expedition to stop William. However, William managed to avoid this attack.

The Treaty of Perth

After Scotland successfully took back the Hebrides, William was likely rewarded. He probably received control of the Isle of Skye and the Isle of Lewis. These gains were officially confirmed by the Treaty of Perth in 1266. This treaty was an agreement that settled the control of the Hebrides islands.

Family and Later Life

William married Jean Comyn. She was the daughter of William, Earl of Buchan. As far as we know, William I had only one son. His son was also named William, and he became the next Earl of Ross after his father.

William I died in May 1274. He passed away at a place called "Earles Allane." This place is probably what we know today as Allanfearn or Allangrange.
