Becoming Duke: William IV's Early Rule
William IV became the Duke of Aquitaine when his father, William III, decided to retire to a monastery in Poitiers in 963. William's mother was Gerloc, and his sister, Adelaide, married Hugh Capet, who later became king.
Early Challenges: Conflicts with Anjou
William's early years as duke were full of battles. He often fought against the powerful counts of Anjou. One of his first major conflicts was against Geoffrey Greymantle, who had taken control of the town of Loudun.
Disputes with King Hugh Capet
In 988, William IV faced a new challenge: Hugh Capet was chosen as the new king of France. William did not want to accept Hugh as king. King Hugh Capet believed he had a right to Aquitaine because a previous king, King Lothair, had once given it to him.
Defending Aquitaine and Supporting an Heir
King Hugh Capet invaded Aquitaine, but William's army defeated the royal forces in the Loire Valley. William also supported a young prince named Louis, who was the son of Charles, Duke of Lower Lorraine. Louis was seen by some as the rightful heir to the French throne, and William welcomed him into his palace of Poitiers, treating him like a true prince.
Family Life and Challenges
In 968, William IV married Emma, whose parents were Theobald I of Blois and Luitgarde of Vermandois. Their marriage had many difficulties. They had different interests and often disagreed. William loved hunting and spent much time on it.
William IV Steps Down as Duke
Because of their disagreements, William and Emma separated for long periods. Eventually, William decided to retire to a monastery, just like his father had done. He stepped down as duke in 990. Emma then took charge of Aquitaine, ruling for their son, William V, until 1004. William and Emma also had another son named Ebles, who passed away after 997.
