William Lloyd Standish IV (February 16, 1930 – January 1, 2015) was an important judge in the United States. He served on a special court called the United States District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania.

Early Life and Education

William Lloyd Standish IV was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 1930. He went to Yale University and earned a degree in 1953. Later, he studied law at the University of Virginia School of Law, finishing in 1956.

What Was His Career Path?

After law school, Standish worked as a lawyer in Pittsburgh from 1956 to 1980. This is called "private practice." He then became a judge for the state of Pennsylvania. He served on the Court of Common Pleas from 1980 to 1987. This court handles many different types of legal cases.

Becoming a Federal Judge

In 1987, President Ronald Reagan chose William Lloyd Standish to become a federal judge. This means he would work for the United States government, not just the state. He was nominated to a seat on the United States District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania. This court hears federal cases in western Pennsylvania.

How Did He Get the Job?

The United States Senate had to approve President Reagan's choice. They confirmed him on November 5, 1987. This means they agreed he was a good person for the job. He officially started his work as a judge on November 6, 1987.

What is Senior Status?

On March 1, 2002, Judge Standish took on "senior status". This is a special role for judges who are older or have served a long time. It means they can work a reduced schedule. He stopped hearing new cases in 2012 but remained a senior judge until he passed away.

Later Life and Passing

William Lloyd Standish IV passed away on January 1, 2015. He was 84 years old. He died in Sewickley, Pennsylvania.
