William Maurice (politician) facts for kids

Sir William Maurice (born April 1552 – died August 1622) was an important Welsh politician. He worked in the English Parliament several times between 1593 and 1611. He helped make laws and represent his area.

Early Life and Family

William Maurice was the son of Morys ap Ellis ap Morys. His grandfather was Ellis ap Morris from Clennenau. William also had a brother, Captain Ellis Maurice. His brother was a soldier who fought for Queen Elizabeth I in Ireland.

A Career in Politics

Sir William Maurice was a very active person in government. He was part of the Council of the Marches of Wales. This group helped manage the border area between England and Wales.

He held a special job called High Sheriff. He was High Sheriff for Caernarvonshire in 1582 and again in 1596. He was also High Sheriff for Merionethshire in 1591 and 1606. The High Sheriff was like a chief law enforcement officer for a county.

In 1593, he was chosen to be a Member of Parliament (MP) for Carnarvonshire. This meant he represented his home area in the English Parliament. He was re-elected as MP for Carnarvonshire in 1597 and 1604. In 1601, he was elected MP for Beaumaris.

William Maurice was a close friend of King James I. He even encouraged the King to use the title "King of Great Britain." For his service, he was made a knight on July 23, 1603. He was from Clennenau and might have been in charge of Harlech Castle.

Personal Life

Sir William Maurice was married three times. His first wife was Margaret Lacon. She passed away in 1572. His second wife was Ellen Wis. His third wife was Jane Johnes, whom he married between 1604 and 1605.

He even had a tailor named John Langley in Shrewsbury. In 1594, he ordered clothes for his wife and daughter. These clothes included a farthingale, which was a hoop skirt, and special sleeves for it.

Later Life

Sir William Maurice passed away when he was 70 years old. He was buried in Penmorfa.
