William Henry Moule (born January 31, 1858 – died August 24, 1939) was an Australian who achieved success in several fields. He was a skilled lawyer, a politician, and a talented cricketer. He is remembered for his contributions to all three areas.

Cricket Career Highlights

William Moule was a good all-around cricketer. He was a decent batsman, a useful bowler, and an excellent fielder. His cricket career was not very long. However, he did play several times for the Victoria team.

Playing for Australia

Most of his important matches were during the 1880 tour of England. He played with the Australian team, led by Billy Murdoch. This tour included a very important game.

First Test Match in England

Moule played in the only Test match of that tour. This game was quickly arranged and took place at The Oval in England. It was the very first Test match ever played on English soil!

Moule's performance before this match had been modest. He hadn't scored many runs or taken many wickets. He only played in the Test because another player, Fred Spofforth, was injured.

Moule's Performance in the Test

In the Test match, Moule batted at number 11, which is usually the last player. He was also the sixth bowler used by his team. He took three wickets for only 23 runs. This made him the most successful bowler in England's first innings.

Later, he scored 34 runs in Australia's second innings. This helped his team avoid a big loss. He and his captain had an 88-run partnership for the last wicket.

William Moule was the last player alive from either team who played in that historic 1880 Test match.

Law and Politics

William Moule was also very successful outside of cricket. He lived in Melbourne at Clarence House while studying. He went to Melbourne Grammar School and then studied law at Melbourne University.

Becoming a Judge

He became a lawyer in 1879 and started his own practice the next year. He worked his way up to become a county court judge. He was especially good at cases involving financial problems. He retired in April 1935. At that time, he had been a judge longer than anyone else on the court.

Political Career

Moule also had a short but impactful career in politics. In the 1894 Victoria state election, he ran for office. He supported the idea of free trade. He won against Sir Thomas Bent, who was a long-time minister and would later become the premier of Victoria.

Moule served in the legislature until 1900. During this time, he led important groups called royal commissions. These groups looked into ways to improve laws and rules for factories and shops.

Family Life

William Moule married Jessie Osborne in Melbourne in January 1885. They had several children. Sadly, one of their sons, Humphrey Osborne Moule, died during the First World War. He was killed at Lone Pine, which was a major battle in the difficult Gallipoli campaign.

William Moule passed away in August 1939 when he was 81 years old. He was survived by his wife, a daughter, and another son.
