William Randolph Hearst Jr. (born January 27, 1908 – died May 14, 1993) was an important American businessman. He was also a newspaper publisher. He belonged to the famous and wealthy Hearst family.
He was the second son of William Randolph Hearst, who was also a very well-known publisher. After his father passed away in 1951, William Jr. became the main editor of Hearst Newspapers. In 1955, he won a special award called the Pulitzer Prize. He earned it for an interview he did with the Soviet leader, Nikita Khrushchev.
Early Life and School
William Hearst Jr. was born on January 27, 1908. His birthplace was Manhattan, which is a part of New York City. His parents were William Randolph Hearst and Millicent Willson.
He went to college at the University of California, Berkeley. While there, he was a member of a student group called Tau Kappa Epsilon.
His Work as a Publisher
William Randolph Hearst Jr. played a big part in his family's business. He helped the Hearst Corporation stay under some family control. After his father's death, the company was managed by a group of thirteen trustees. Five of these trustees were from the Hearst family.
He helped make sure the family's shares in the company were bought by a family trust. This happened when tax laws changed. He also helped a long-time company leader, Richard E. Berlin, step down. William Jr. later led the trust himself. Today, his son, William Randolph Hearst III, is part of this group of trustees.
William Randolph Hearst Jr. was also a member of the Sons of the American Revolution. This group honors people whose ancestors fought in the American Revolution. He even appeared briefly as a character named Bill in the musical Newsies.
His Family Life
William Randolph Hearst Jr. was married three times during his life:
- He married Alma Walker on March 24, 1928. They divorced on May 26, 1932.
- He married Lorelle McCarver on March 28, 1933. They divorced on March 30, 1948.
- He married Austine McDonnell on July 29, 1948. They stayed married until her death on December 15, 1991.
He had two sons with Austine McDonnell:
- William Randolph Hearst III, born on June 18, 1949.
- John Augustine Hearst, born on October 24, 1952.
