William Smith Hanger Baylor (born April 7, 1831 – died August 30, 1862) was an American lawyer and soldier. He served as a colonel in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War.
William Baylor's Military Journey
Before the Civil War began, William Baylor was already involved in military training. He led a local group of citizen soldiers called the West Augusta Guard. This group later became part of the 5th Virginia Infantry Regiment. In April 1862, Baylor was given an important role. He was made the colonel, or leader, of this regiment.
Leading the Stonewall Brigade
William Baylor became a very important leader during the war. On August 9, 1862, a general named Charles S. Winder passed away. After this, Baylor took command of a famous group of soldiers known as the Stonewall Brigade. This brigade was well-known for its bravery and strength.
Baylor was expected to be promoted to a higher rank, called brigadier general. However, this promotion could not be officially confirmed. On August 30, 1862, he was fighting in a major battle. This battle is known as the Second Battle of Bull Run (or Second Manassas).
During the fight, Baylor showed great courage. He took the flag of the 33rd Virginia Infantry regiment. He then bravely led his brigade forward in a charge against the Union Army. Sadly, during this charge, Colonel Baylor was killed in action. He was a respected leader who was seen as worthy of commanding the famous Stonewall Brigade.
