William St Clair was an important Scottish noble from the 1300s. He held the titles of Lord Herdmanston and Baron of Carfrae and Cessford. Being a "noble" meant he came from a powerful and respected family with special rights and lands.
William's father was also named William St Clair of Herdmanston. His father was a brave knight who fought in the famous Battle of Bannockburn in 1314. This battle was a big moment in Scottish history, where Scotland won its independence from England.

William St Clair married a woman named Margaret. She was the daughter of William St Clair, who was known as the Master of Roslin. Together, William and Margaret had three sons:

After William St Clair passed away, his wife Margaret married again in 1357. Her second husband was Thomas Stewart, who was the Earl of Angus and also the Chamberlain of Scotland. The Chamberlain was a very important official in the king's court, managing royal finances and household affairs.
