William Stanford Hart Sr. (born November 19, 1925 – died September 23, 1999) was an important American politician. He was a member of the Democratic Party. He served as the Mayor of East Orange, New Jersey. He made history in 1969 by becoming the first African American mayor elected in a big New Jersey city. He also led a group called the National Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials.

Early Life and Education

William Stanford Hart Sr. was born on November 19, 1925. His parents were Margaret and John Hart. He worked hard in school. He went to Delaware State University. Later, he earned a master's degree from Seton Hall University.

Military Service and Teaching Career

During World War II, William Hart served in the U.S. Navy. After his military service, he became a teacher. He taught students in Elizabeth, New Jersey.

Public Service and Political Career

William Hart was dedicated to helping his community. He worked for the government in different roles. In 1962, he became an Executive Assistant to Governor Richard J. Hughes. He also served as the Director of the New Jersey State Division of Youth. This role helped young people in the state.

Serving on the City Council

In 1959, William Hart was elected to the East Orange City Council. He was the first African American to hold this position. He was re-elected two more times, in 1963 and 1967. This showed that people trusted him to represent them.

Becoming Mayor of East Orange

William Hart made history in 1969. He was elected as the Mayor of East Orange. He took over from James W. Kelly Jr.. This made him the first African American mayor of a major city in New Jersey. He was re-elected in 1973, serving two terms as mayor.
