Life of William Tate: A Painter's Journey
William Tate was born in 1747. His family lived near Barnsley, England. His father worked as a glass maker. William was baptized on November 14th in Darton.
Early Life and Learning to Paint
William went to school in Woolton, near Liverpool. His brother, Richard Tate, lived there. Richard was also interested in painting. In 1769, the famous artist Joseph Wright stayed with Richard. This connection helped William. Soon after, William Tate became a student of Joseph Wright.
Exhibiting Art and Facing Challenges
In 1772, William Tate showed his art for the first time. He exhibited with Joseph Wright at the Society of Artists of Great Britain in London. He became a fellow of this society. Over the next 20 years, Tate's paintings were shown in many cities. These included Manchester, Liverpool, and London. He also exhibited at the Royal Academy of Art.
Both William Tate and Joseph Wright had disagreements with the Royal Academy. This might have made it harder for Tate's career to grow. However, he found good support in Liverpool. In 1784, his art was shown there. It was displayed with the same importance as paintings by Joshua Reynolds, another very famous artist.
Moving Cities and Later Years
In 1787, William Tate moved to Manchester. There, he received many important requests to paint portraits. For example, a man named Daniel Daulby asked Tate to paint him and both of his wives.
Later, in 1804, Tate moved south to Bath. He passed away there in 1806.
William Tate's Art Today
Many of William Tate's portraits can still be seen today. The Walker Art Gallery has several of his paintings. These include portraits of important people of his time. For example, there is a painting of Daniel Daulby. There is also a portrait of the sister of William Roscoe.
Tate also painted his nephew, Thomas Moss Tate. He painted his niece, Elizabeth Williamson. She was the wife of Joseph Williamson. There are 12 of his paintings in national collections across the UK. These include a portrait of Joseph Wright. His painting Girl and Boy with a Bladder is at the Derby Museum and Art Gallery. This museum also has a large collection of Joseph Wright's art.
