William Tayler facts for kids
William Tayler (1808–1892) was a British man who worked for the East India Company. This was a powerful British company that ruled parts of India for many years. William Tayler lived in India from 1829 to 1867.
In 1855, he became a leader in the city of Patna. In 1857, he was involved in stopping a big uprising called the Sepoy Mutiny. However, his bosses thought his actions were too strict. He was removed from his main job and given a less important one.
William Tayler's Art and Books
William Tayler was also an artist. He loved to draw and paint. He drew beautiful landscapes, scenes from everyday life, and people in their traditional clothes.
His Published Sketches
In 1842, he published a book in London. It was called Sketches Illustrating the Manners and Customs of the Indians. This book included six of his drawings.
His Life Story
Later in his life, in 1881 and 1882, Tayler wrote a two-part book about his experiences. It was called Thirty-Eight Years in India. This book was special because it included 100 of his own drawings.
Painting of a Rajah
One of his watercolor paintings shows the rajah of Burdwan in West Bengal. This was likely Mahtab Chand, who was a ruler from 1832 to 1879. The British thought he was a wise and loyal leader. This painting is now part of a collection at Brown University Library.
