William Fagan's Political Career

William Fagan had an active career in politics.

Becoming a Member of Parliament

In August 1847, Fagan was elected as an MP for Cork City. He was part of the Repeal Association. This group wanted to end the union between Great Britain and Ireland. He joined the House of Commons, which is a main part of the UK Parliament.

Writing About Daniel O'Connell

Later in 1847, Fagan published a book. It was called "The life and times of Daniel O'Connell". He wrote an introduction "To The people of Ireland." In it, he called O'Connell "the greatest man that this, or any other country, ever produced." Daniel O'Connell was a very important Irish political leader.

Resigning and Rejoining Parliament

On April 14, 1851, Fagan left Parliament. He did this by taking a special job called Steward of the Chiltern Hundreds. This was a way for MPs to officially resign. After that, he became a Commissioner of Insolvency. This meant he helped manage cases where people could not pay their debts.

However, Fagan ran for Parliament again. In July 1852, he was re-elected as an independent Whig. He promised to support an independent Irish group in Parliament. He was elected again in 1857 and for a final time on May 6, 1859. Sadly, he passed away just ten days later, at 57 years old.

Other Important Roles

Before becoming an MP, Fagan held other important positions. In 1844, he was elected Mayor of Cork. He also served as an Alderman and a Justice of the Peace (JP) for County Cork.
