William Wirt Culbertson (born September 22, 1835 – died October 31, 1911) was an important American politician. He served as a U.S. Representative for the state of Kentucky. He also held several other public offices during his life.

Early Life and Military Service

William Wirt Culbertson was born in Lewistown, Pennsylvania, on September 22, 1835. Not much is known about his early childhood.

When he was older, he joined the Union Army during the American Civil War. He served as an officer, helping to lead soldiers. His time in the military showed his dedication to public service.

Start in Politics

After his military service, Culbertson became involved in politics in Kentucky. He was a member of the Republican Party.

Kentucky State Legislature

His first major political role was in 1870. That year, he became a member of the Kentucky House of Representatives. This group helps make laws for the state of Kentucky.

Later, in 1873, he was elected to the Kentucky Senate. This is another important part of the state's law-making body. Serving in both houses showed his growing influence.

Mayor of Ashland

William Wirt Culbertson also served his local community. On June 7, 1882, he became the 3rd Mayor of Ashland, Kentucky. As mayor, he was in charge of the city's daily operations. He worked to improve the city for its residents. He served as mayor until March 4, 1883.

Serving in Congress

After his time as mayor, Culbertson was elected to a national role. He became a U.S. Representative for Kentucky's 9th congressional district. He started this job on March 4, 1883.
