William d'Alton Mann (born September 27, 1839 – died May 17, 1920) was an important American figure. He was a brave soldier during the American Civil War, a clever businessman, and a publisher of newspapers and magazines.

William D. Mann's Life Story

William D. Mann was born in Sandusky, Ohio. When the American Civil War began, he joined the army. He first became a captain in the 1st Michigan Cavalry.

Military Service in the Civil War

Later, he was promoted to lieutenant colonel of the 5th Michigan Cavalry. In 1862, he helped create the 7th Michigan Cavalry. He was promoted to colonel of this regiment on February 9, 1863. Colonel Mann fought in important battles, including the famous Battle of Gettysburg. There, he served under the well-known General George Armstrong Custer.

After the War and Business Ventures

After the war ended, William D. Mann became a member of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States. He also became a successful businessman. He invented the Mann Boudoir Car, which was a special sleeping car for trains. This made train travel more comfortable for many people.

Publishing Career

Colonel Mann also had a career in publishing. He was known for publishing several newspapers and magazines. These included the Mobile Register, The Smart Set, and Town Topics.
