Sir William de Lindsay was an important Scottish noble who lived in the 1100s. He passed away around the year 1200. He held several important titles, including Lord of Ercildum, Lord of Crawford, and Baron of Luffness. He also served as the Justiciar of Lothian, which was a very important legal role in Scotland.

Sir William's Life

William de Lindsay was the son of Walter de Lindsay. He became the owner of half of the lands in a place called Cavendish, Suffolk in England. He received these lands through his wife, Aleanora, who inherited them from her nephew.

In 1164, William was part of the Scottish Parliament. He attended as the Baron of Luffness. Later, in 1174, King William I of Scotland was captured. This happened during the Battle of Alnwick. William de Lindsay was then given as a hostage for the King. This meant he was held in Falaise, Normandy, to ensure the King's safety.

William also held a very important job called the Justiciar of Lothian. This role was like a chief judge or legal officer for the region of Lothian. He served in this position for many years, from 1189 to 1199.

Family Life

William de Lindsay married a woman named Alienora de Limesi, also known as Aleanora de Limesay. She was the daughter of Gerard, Lord of Limesay, and Amicia de Bidun. William and Aleanora had several children:

  • David de Lindsay of Crawford and Ercildum: He passed away in 1214. David married Marjorie de Huntingdon and had children.
  • Walter de Lindsay of Molesworth and Lamberton: He passed away in 1221. Walter also had children. Some historical records suggest Walter might have been William's brother, not his son.
