Willie Louis Sands (born April 12, 1949) is a very important judge in the United States. He is a senior United States district judge for the Middle District of Georgia. This means he helps make sure laws are followed fairly in that area.

Becoming a Judge

Early Life and Education

Willie Louis Sands was born in Bradley, Georgia, on April 12, 1949. He worked hard in school and went to Mercer University. In 1971, he earned a degree called a Bachelor of Arts. Then, in 1974, he got his law degree from Mercer University School of Law. A law degree is what you need to become a lawyer.

After finishing his studies, he joined the United States Army Reserve. He was a second lieutenant in the Signal Corps, which helps with communications. He stayed in the Reserve until 1980 and became a captain.

His Legal Career

Mr. Sands started his legal career helping the government. From 1975 to 1978, he was an assistant district attorney in Macon, Georgia. This means he was a lawyer who worked for the government to bring cases against people who broke the law.

Then, from 1978 to 1987, he worked as an assistant United States attorney for the Middle District of Georgia. In this role, he represented the U.S. government in legal matters.

After that, he worked as a private lawyer in Macon from 1987 to 1991. This means he helped people with their legal problems. From 1991 to 1993, he became a judge on the Superior Court in Macon. This was his first time serving as a judge.

Becoming a Federal Judge

In 1994, President Bill Clinton chose Willie Louis Sands to become a federal judge. This was for a new judge position in the United States District Court for the Middle District of Georgia. The United States Senate agreed with the President's choice on May 6, 1994. Judge Sands officially started his job on May 9, 1994.

He served as the main judge, called the chief judge, for the court from 2001 to 2006. On April 12, 2014, Judge Sands took on a new role called "senior status." This means he still works as a judge but with a lighter workload.
