Professional Basketball Journey
Willie Reed was not chosen in the 2011 NBA draft. This meant he had to find other ways to start his professional career. He began by playing for teams in different leagues.
Early Career and D-League Success
After not being drafted, Reed signed with a Spanish team in 2011 but left before the season started. In 2012, he joined the Springfield Armor in the NBA D-League (now called the G League). He played very well there.
- In the 2012–13 season, he averaged 14.8 points and 7.8 rebounds per game.
- He was recognized as an Honorable Mention All-Development League Team player.
- He also played briefly for the Memphis Grizzlies in the NBA at the end of that season.
Reed continued to play in the D-League for teams like the Grand Rapids Drive and the Iowa Energy. He was a standout player in the league.
- In 2014, he was named to the NBA D-League All-Defensive Second Team.
- In 2015, he was an NBA D-League All-Star.
- He also made the All-NBA D-League First Team and the NBA D-League All-Defensive First Team in 2015.
Time in the NBA
Reed eventually made it to the NBA.
- Brooklyn Nets (2015–16): He signed with the Brooklyn Nets in 2015. He had surgery on his thumb but later made his NBA debut. He scored a season-high 12 points in one game.
- Miami Heat (2016–17): In 2016, Reed joined the Miami Heat. This was a strong season for him. He had career highs of 22 points and 18 rebounds in a game against the Phoenix Suns. He also scored 22 points in another game against the Los Angeles Lakers.
- Los Angeles Clippers and Detroit Pistons (2017–18): He signed with the Los Angeles Clippers in 2017. Later that season, he was traded to the Detroit Pistons. He was then traded again to the Chicago Bulls but was immediately waived.

- Salt Lake City Stars (2018–19, 2020): He returned to the NBA G League in 2018, playing for the Salt Lake City Stars. He was the first overall pick in the 2018 NBA G League Draft. - Budućnost (2020–22): From 2020 to 2022, Reed played for Budućnost in Montenegro. He won the Montenegrin Basketball League championship in 2021 and the Montenegrin Cup twice (2021, 2022). He was also named to the All-EuroCup First Team in 2021, which is a big honor in European basketball.
