William Matthew Walsh (born October 25, 1961) is an important Irish leader in the airline world. He is currently the director general of the International Air Transport Association (IATA). Before this, he was the chief executive officer (CEO) of International Airlines Group until 2020. He also led other big airlines like Aer Lingus and British Airways.

Early Life and First Steps in Aviation

Willie Walsh was born in Dublin, Ireland. He went to a local high school called Ardscoil Rís. When he was 17, he started training to be a pilot. He joined Aer Lingus, Ireland's main airline, as a cadet in 1979.

While working as a pilot, he continued his education. He earned a master's degree in management and business from Trinity College, Dublin. He became a captain, flying large planes like the Boeing 737.

Moving into Airline Management

After flying for many years, Willie Walsh began working in airline management. From 1998 to 2000, he was the chief executive of Futura, a company that was part of Aer Lingus at the time. In 2000, he returned to Aer Lingus as the chief operating officer (COO). This role meant he was in charge of the daily operations of the airline.

Leading Major Airlines

In October 2001, Willie Walsh became the CEO of Aer Lingus. The airline was facing money problems. He made some big changes to help the company.

Turning Around Aer Lingus

As CEO, Walsh made Aer Lingus into a low-cost airline. This meant making flights more affordable for passengers. He reduced the number of staff by 2,000 people. He also stopped offering some services, like Business Class on short flights. These changes helped the company start making a profit again.

However, not all his ideas worked perfectly. For example, he tried to hire outside companies to clean planes. This caused disagreements with the airline's workers. In 2002, there was a three-day work stoppage during these difficult times.

The management team suggested that Aer Lingus should be sold on the stock market. This idea was not popular with the airline's unions. They worried that a private company would make working conditions even tougher. The Irish government, which owned most of Aer Lingus, decided not to sell the airline. Because of this, Willie Walsh left the company in January 2005.

Leading British Airways

After leaving Aer Lingus, Willie Walsh joined British Airways in May 2005. He spent six months learning about the company. In October 2005, he officially became the CEO of British Airways.

During his time at British Airways, the airline industry faced many challenges. These included bad weather like snow and fog. There was also a time in April 2010 when many European flights were stopped. This happened because of ash from an erupting volcano in Iceland. Walsh thought this reaction was too much for a small risk.

Creating International Airlines Group

Willie Walsh played a key role in a major merger. He oversaw the joining of British Airways and Iberia, a Spanish airline. This created a new large company called International Airlines Group (IAG) in January 2011. He also helped create a special agreement between British Airways, Iberia, and American Airlines. This meant the three airlines could work together to sell seats and share money on flights across the Atlantic Ocean.

On January 24, 2011, Walsh became the chief executive of IAG. Both British Airways and Iberia are part of the Oneworld airline alliance. It was announced in January 2020 that he would step down as CEO. However, he decided to stay longer to help the airline during the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Willie Walsh officially retired from IAG in September 2020. Luis Gallego took over his role.

Leading IATA

On November 24, 2020, Willie Walsh was chosen for a new important role. He became the director general of the International Air Transport Association (IATA). He started this job in April 2021. IATA is a global group that represents airlines around the world.

Awards and Special Mentions

In March 2014, a magazine called Aviation Week & Space Technology recognized Willie Walsh. They named him their 2014 Laureate for Commercial Aviation. This award celebrates people who have made big contributions to the airline industry.
