History of Wilmer
Wilmer got its name from Richard Hooker Wilmer. He was an important leader in the Episcopal Church in Alabama. The first post office in Wilmer opened in 1894.
Perry Walter Evans was Wilmer's first mayor. He also started the fire department for the community. In the 1990s, Wilmer became known for changing its speed limits often. This was done to help raise money for the local area.

Wilmer is located in the southwestern part of Alabama. It is northwest of the city of Mobile. It is also close to the border between Alabama and Mississippi.
The community is on U.S. Route 98, which is a main road. Wilmer is also two miles northwest of Big Creek Lake. The land in Wilmer is about 249 feet (76 m) above sea level.
