History of Winamac
The name "Winamac" comes from a word used by the Potawatomi people. It means "catfish." The town was chosen to be the county seat in 1839. Winamac officially became a town in 1868.
The Winamac post office has been open since 1839. Several important buildings in Winamac are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These include the Pulaski County Courthouse, the Dr. George W. Thompson House, and Vurpillat's Opera House.
Explore Winamac's Landmarks
Winamac has many interesting landmarks. They tell stories about the town's past.
The Artesian Well: A Historic Water Source
In 1877, a company was drilling for oil near the Tippecanoe River. Instead, they found a strong flow of water 264 feet underground. This was called the Artesian Well.
People believed the water had healing powers. Local boys would even deliver the water to homes to earn money. By the late 1800s, interest in the well faded. It was damaged by 1920 but later fixed.
Sadly, other projects nearby caused the well's water pressure to drop. It eventually dried up. Today, the well is capped, and a special plaque remembers its history. You can find it in the town park.
The Memorial Swinging Bridge: A Community Treasure
The Winamac Town Park is also home to a large swinging bridge. It crosses the Tippecanoe River. This bridge was opened on July 4, 1923. It honors soldiers and sailors from the Civil War and later wars.
The bridge is a very popular spot for locals and visitors. Many greeting cards and photos show this famous bridge.
Recently, a project called "Light Up Our Legacy" raised money. Their goal was to add LED lights to the bridge. The money was raised, and the bridge was updated in early 2023. The new lights were planned to be shown on July 4, 2023.
