How the Science Centre Started
Early Days of INTECH
The science centre first opened in 1986. Back then, it was called INTECH. This name came from "Interactive Technology." It was created because there weren't enough scientists and engineers in the local area.
INTECH started in a small, old canteen at Kings' School, Winchester. It quickly became very popular. By the late 1990s, more and more people wanted to visit. The centre needed a much bigger space to welcome everyone.
Moving to a New Home
In 2002, INTECH moved to its current location at Morn Hill. Building this new, purpose-built centre cost about £10 million. Many different groups helped pay for it. These included the Millennium Commission, NTL, IBM, and various government departments.
The new centre was officially opened on October 28, 2002. A very important person, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, came to open it. The new building was much larger, with 3,500 square metres of space.
Becoming Winchester Science Centre
After being known as INTECH for many years, the centre changed its name. In October 2013, it reopened as the Winchester Science Centre. It has been a popular place for learning and discovery ever since.
