The Windmill Hill Historic District is a special area in Jamestown, Rhode Island, recognized for its important history. It's like a big outdoor museum that protects old buildings and the beautiful countryside around them. This district is located between Eldred Avenue to the north, East Shore Road to the east, Great Creek to the south, and Narragansett Bay to the west.
What Makes This Area Special?
This historic district is full of interesting old places. You'll find six old farmsteads, which are groups of farm buildings. There's also the Quaker Meetinghouse, a historic place of worship. One of the most famous landmarks is the Jamestown Windmill, along with the house and barn where the miller used to live.
The land itself is also very pretty, with gentle rolling hills, open fields where animals might graze, and peaceful forests.
A Look Back in Time
The Windmill Hill Historic District was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. This means it's recognized by the United States government as a place that's important to our country's history.
But the history of this area goes back even further! Long before the farms and the windmill were built, Native Americans lived here. Archeologists have found many clues about their lives in this area. Because of these important discoveries, this part of Jamestown is also known as the Jamestown Archeological District. It helps us learn about the very first people who lived on this land.
