Discovering the World of Wings of Fire
Dragons and Their Homes
The Wings of Fire stories happen on a magical planet. This planet has two main continents: Pyrrhia and Pantala. These lands are mostly home to smart dragons. These dragons live in ten different tribes. Seven tribes live on Pyrrhia: MudWings, SeaWings, RainWings, SandWings, SkyWings, IceWings, and NightWings. The other three tribes, SilkWings, HiveWings, and LeafWings, live on Pantala. There was once another tribe called the BeetleWings, but they are no longer around. The SilkWings and HiveWings are their descendants.
Each dragon tribe usually lives in a special habitat that suits them. For example, RainWings live in the Rainforest Kingdom. IceWings prefer the cold Ice Kingdom. Dragons mostly live with others from their own tribe. Sometimes, dragons from different tribes fall in love. This can lead to hybrid dragons, who have traits from both tribes.
Most tribes have special abilities that help them in their homes. Some can resist cold, others can breathe underwater, or change their scale colors to hide. Queens rule these tribes. Humans also live on both continents. Dragons used to call humans "scavengers" and thought they were just prey. But after some important events in the books, dragons started to see humans differently. Some dragons even keep humans as pets! The books explore these interesting relationships.
A Glimpse into the Past
Over 5,000 years before the main stories, humans were the most powerful species on Pyrrhia. Dragons lived alone back then and did not have cities. As human empires fought over land, they looked for new ways to win. One advisor, Cottonmouth, led a group to steal a dragon's egg. Other empires soon did the same. Before long, every emperor had dragons to help them. Eventually, the first dragon whose egg was stolen gathered other dragons. They fought back, burning human towns. Most humans went into hiding, and Cottonmouth's group fled across the ocean.
The Exciting Stories: Arcs and Books
The main Wings of Fire series has three completed story arcs. A fourth arc is now being released. Each arc has five books, except for the fourth arc which will have three. These stories focus on young dragons, called dragonets. Each book tells the story from the point of view of one main dragon character. There are fifteen books in the main series. There are also four short stories called Winglets. Two longer standalone novels are known as Legends. Many companion books and graphic novel versions of the main series are also available.
The Dragonet Prophecy Arc
The first arc includes five books. These are The Dragonet Prophecy (2012), The Lost Heir (2013), The Hidden Kingdom (2013), The Dark Secret (2013), and The Brightest Night (2014). The main characters are Clay, Tsunami, Glory, Starflight, and Sunny. This arc takes place during a long war among the SandWing tribe. This war started when Queen Oasis of the SandWings died without naming a clear heir. Her three daughters, Blaze, Blister, and Burn, all wanted to be queen. Clay, Tsunami, Glory, Starflight, and Sunny are known as the Dragonets of Destiny. A prophecy says they must choose the next queen to end the twenty-year war.
The Jade Mountain Prophecy Arc
The second arc also has five books. They are Moon Rising (2014), Winter Turning (2015), Escaping Peril (2015), Talons of Power (2016), and Darkness of Dragons (2017). The main characters are Moonwatcher, Winter, Peril, Turtle, and Qibli. This arc begins six months after the first war ended. The Dragonets of Destiny started a new school called Jade Mountain Academy. Dragons from all tribes could attend. The books follow these five students. They face new and old dangers. They try to stop a terrible future predicted by the "Jade Mountain Prophecy."
The Lost Continent Prophecy Arc
The third arc includes five books. These are The Lost Continent (2018), The Hive Queen (2018), The Poison Jungle (2019), The Dangerous Gift (2021), and The Flames of Hope (2022). The main characters are Blue, Cricket, Sundew, Queen Snowfall, and Luna. This arc introduces a second continent called Pantala. It is far west of Pyrrhia. A powerful HiveWing dragon, Queen Wasp, rules Pantala. Most dragons in this arc are from Pantala, except for Queen Snowfall. For a long time, dragons on each continent did not know about the other. These books follow five dragons. They work to uncover Queen Wasp's secrets. They also try to stop a dangerous, mind-controlling plant that could destroy all dragon tribes.
The Forgotten Isles Prophecy Arc
A fourth arc, called The Forgotten Isles Prophecy, is currently being released. The first book in this arc, Book 16, is titled The Hybrid Prince. It is scheduled for release on March 3, 2026. Umber is the main character. It was announced that Book 16 takes place sometime after Book 6 (Moon Rising). It was also announced that Arc 4 will be a trilogy of three books, not five like the earlier arcs.
More Adventures and Companion Books
Legends: Deeper Stories
Two special standalone books are called Legends. They are Darkstalker (2016) and Dragonslayer (2020). These books add more details to important events mentioned in the main series. They also show these events from different characters' points of view. Darkstalker tells the story of Darkstalker through the eyes of Fathom, Clearsight, and Darkstalker himself. Dragonslayer retells major events from the first arc from the perspectives of three humans: Leaf, Ivy, and Wren.
Winglets: Short Tales
Short stories called "Winglets" have also been published. They add more context to events briefly mentioned in the main series or Legends. These stories are told from the viewpoints of secondary characters. The four stories are Prisoner (2015), Assassin (2015), Deserter (2016), and Runaway (2016). Runaway tells its story through Foeslayer, Arctic, and Snowflake. These stories were first released as e-books. They have since been printed several times. A fifth Winglet, titled Hero, is set to be published on February 3, 2026.
Graphic Novels and Other Fun
The Wings of Fire series has also been turned into graphic novels. Barry Deutsch and Tui T. Sutherland adapted them. Mike Holmes drew the pictures, and Maarta Laiho colored them. The first graphic novel was released in 2018.
There are also five companion books and one special re-release. Forge Your Dragon World (2022) is an activity book. It gives tips on creating your own dragon stories and characters. The Official Coloring Book (2022) lets you color many characters from the series. A Guide to the Dragon World (2023) shares stories and art about the ten tribes and their world. How to Draw (2023) is a guide to drawing dragons. The Official Wings of Fire Stained Glass Art Book (2024) has crafts to make stained glass art. A special edition of The Dragonet Prophecy (2024) was also released. It included unique cover art, an interview with the author, and an early chapter that was not in the original book.
