Wingville is a small, unincorporated community in Baker County, Oregon, United States. An unincorporated community is a place where people live that does not have its own local government. It is not officially a city or town.
You can find Wingville in the northwestern part of Baker County. It is located near the crossing of Wingville Lane and Old Wingville Road. This area is northwest of Baker City and northeast of Pocahontas.
Wingville's Interesting Name
The name "Wingville" has a unique story from American history. It comes from a nickname given to former soldiers. These soldiers fought for the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War.
Soldiers Settle in Oregon
After the war, some of these soldiers moved to Oregon. They had served under a general named Sterling Price. People sometimes called a group of his soldiers a "wing" of his army. A group of these former soldiers settled in Baker County. This is how the community got its name, Wingville.
Early Days and the Post Office
Wingville had its own post office a long time ago. It opened on June 23, 1871. The post office helped people send and receive mail. It stayed open for about eight years. The post office closed in July 1879. The first person to be in charge of the post office was John R. McLain.
