Winnipeg is a small, unincorporated community located in eastern Laclede County, in the state of Missouri. An "unincorporated community" means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town.
This community is nestled in the Ozarks, a beautiful region of hills and forests in south central Missouri. You can find Winnipeg sitting above Nelson Creek. It's about three miles northeast of Missouri Route 32. Other nearby places include Falcon and Nebo, which are to the west and southwest. Also, Missouri Route 17 and a part of Fort Leonard Wood are about two miles to the east.
History of Winnipeg
The community of Winnipeg has an interesting past, especially concerning its name.
Post Office and Early Days
A post office was opened in Winnipeg in the year 1906. This was an important place for people to send and receive mail. The post office served the community for many years. It finally closed its doors in 1954.
How Winnipeg Got Its Name
Winnipeg was named after a much larger city: Winnipeg, which is in Canada. Some of the very first settlers who came to this area in Missouri were originally from that Canadian city. They decided to name their new home after the place they came from.
