Winton is a ghost town located in Sweetwater County, Wyoming, in the United States. It is about 5 miles (8 km) northeast of Rock Springs. A ghost town is a place that used to be a busy community but is now mostly empty.

The Story of Winton

Winton was once known by another name: Megeath. A company called Megeath Coal Company owned a Post Office there. This Post Office was named Winton.

Later, a big railroad company called Union Pacific bought out the Megeath company. When they took over, they decided to keep the name Winton for the town. This is how the area got its final name.

Even though Winton is now a ghost town, some important people were born there.

Lawrence Welsh

One such person was Lawrence Welsh. He became a very important leader in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Spokane. A Bishop is a high-ranking leader in the Catholic Church. Lawrence Welsh was the fourth Bishop for the Spokane area.
