The Wiyabal (also known as Widjabal) are an Aboriginal Australian people. They come from the state of New South Wales in Australia. Their name might have changed a little over time, but they are an important part of Australia's history.

Wiyabal Country: Their Traditional Lands

The Wiyabal people traditionally lived on a special area of land, which they called their "Country." This land was very important to them, as it was where their ancestors lived for thousands of years.

Their traditional Country covered about 600 square miles (about 1,550 square kilometers). This area was located along the Upper Richmond River. It stretched south from a town called Kyogle down to the area near Casino. The eastern edge of their land was around Dunoon. This land provided everything they needed to live, including food, water, and resources for shelter.

Words from the Wiyabal Language

The Wiyabal people spoke their own language, which is a big part of their culture and identity. Here are a few words from their language:

  • groomon or kroomon means kangaroo
  • kooning means mother
  • marmong means father
  • tobury means tame dog
  • tucki means whiteman

These words give us a small peek into their rich language and how they described the world around them.
