Wolfgang Schreyer (1927–2017) was a German writer. He was famous for his exciting adventure stories. He also wrote science fiction for TV shows and movies. Schreyer wrote more than 20 adventure books during his life.

Life of Wolfgang Schreyer

Wolfgang Schreyer was born in Magdeburg, Germany, in 1927. His father worked as a pharmacist. After finishing high school, Wolfgang joined the German army. This was during World War II. He became a prisoner of war. American forces released him in 1946.

Early Career and Writing

From 1947 to 1950, Schreyer trained and worked as a chemist. Then, from 1950 to 1952, he managed a medicine company. This was in East Germany.

Wolfgang Schreyer became a full-time writer after his first crime novel came out. This book was called Großgarage Südwest. He traveled a lot, especially to the Caribbean and the United States. He lived in Magdeburg until 1972. After that, he moved to Ahrenshoop, a town by the Baltic Sea.

Schreyer wrote many novels. Most of them were entertaining adventure stories. They often mixed made-up events with real facts. His most popular books were set in Central America and the Caribbean. He also wrote crime stories, a science-fiction story, and scripts for TV and radio. Wolfgang Schreyer sold over five million books. This made him one of the most successful writers in East Germany.

Awards and Memberships

In 1956, Wolfgang Schreyer received the Heinrich-Mann-Preis. This was an important award for writers. He was a member of the East German authors' group since 1952. Later, he joined PEN International, a worldwide group for writers. After Germany became one country again in 1990, he joined the German authors' group.

Wolfgang Schreyer passed away on November 14, 2017. He was 89 years old.
