The Woman in Hat and Fur Collar (Marie-Thérèse Walter) is a famous painting by Pablo Picasso. He created it in 1937. You can see it today at the National Art Museum of Catalonia (Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya) in Barcelona, Spain. This painting shows Picasso's unique style.
About the Painting
Picasso painted this artwork in Paris in 1937. It is one of many portraits he made of Marie-Thérèse Walter. She was an important person in his life and the mother of his daughter, Maya. Picasso often painted Marie-Thérèse between 1927 and 1935.
In these portraits, Picasso explored Marie-Thérèse's youth and personality. He used a special way of painting called 'Picasso style'. He would combine different views of her face into one image. For example, you might see her face from the front and the side at the same time. This made her look very unique and full of life.
Even though the shapes in the painting might look a bit strange, you can still easily tell it's Marie-Thérèse. Her eyes might look in different directions, and her features might be sharp. But Picasso made sure her main features were still there. He did this with other people he painted too, like Dora Maar.
Picasso was known for reinventing the human body in his art. In Woman in Hat and Fur Collar, he shows Marie-Thérèse's face from the side and the front at the same time. She seems to be looking both left and right at the viewer.
Where the Painting Is Now
The National Art Museum of Catalonia (MNAC) opened in 2004. At first, it didn't have many works by modern artists like Picasso. This painting joined the museum's collection in 2007. It was one of eight artworks that helped fill gaps in the museum's collection of Picasso's work.
This painting is made with oil paints on canvas. Picasso painted it in Paris on December 4, 1937. He did not sign the painting with his name. Instead, he wrote "4D37" in the top right corner to show the date. The painting is on loan to the museum from the Albertis Foundation.
