The Lake and Village History
The name "Wonder Lake" refers to both the actual lake and the village. The village was officially started in 1974. It was first called the Village of Sunrise Ridge, but its name was changed to the Village of Wonder Lake a few years later.
The area around Wonder Lake has been growing. In late 2020, new homes started being built, which was the first big building project since before the "Great Recession" (a time when the economy was very slow). One new neighborhood, called Stonewater, is being built on the east side of the lake. It's expected to add almost 10,000 more people to the village's population by 2040! Other building projects that had stopped during the recession also started up again on the west side of the lake.
To help keep the lake clean and prevent it from filling up with dirt, the village took control of the lake bottom in the early 2000s. This allowed them to start cleanup efforts, even though some people initially disagreed about the costs.
