Wonder Lake State Park is a large park covering about 1,145-acre (4.6 km2) in Putnam County, New York. It's a great place to explore nature and enjoy the outdoors.
A Look Back in Time
The main lake, Wonder Lake, was built in the 1930s. A man named A.L. Cushman, who owned many bakeries in New York City, made improvements to his property, including building this lake. A smaller pond, Laurel Pond, was also created around the same time.
Did you know that a famous TV star once lived here? The core part of Wonder Lake State Park used to be the summer home of Elizabeth Montgomery. She was well-known for her role in the TV show Bewitched. She lived there until 1995.
The land became a state park in November 1998. The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation bought the land to protect it. Over the years, more land was added, making the park even bigger for everyone to enjoy.
What Can You Do at the Park?
Wonder Lake State Park has many trails for hiking and exploring. As of 2013, there were about 8.7 miles (14 km) of trails.
One of the main trails is the Highlands Trail. This trail goes past Laurel Pond and circles around Wonder Lake. There are also four other trails that cover different parts of the park, letting you see lots of nature.
The park also helps protect a part of the Great Swamp watershed. This means it helps keep the water clean for the area. It also connects to other public lands nearby, creating a larger natural space.
