Sherwin David "Wood" Harris (born on October 17, 1969) is an American actor. He became well-known for his roles in several popular movies and TV shows.
Some of his most famous roles include Julius Campbell in the Disney film Remember the Titans (2000) and the musician Jimi Hendrix in the TV movie Hendrix (2000). He also played Avon Barksdale in the TV series The Wire (2002–2008) and Ace in the film Paid in Full (2002). More recently, he has been seen in superhero and sports movies like Ant-Man (2015) and the Creed film series.
Early Life and Education
Wood Harris was born in Chicago, Illinois. His mother, Mattie, was a seamstress, and his father, John, was a bus driver. Friends gave him the nickname "Wood" because his first name, Sherwin, was sometimes hard for people to say.
He studied at Northern Illinois University (NIU), where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Theater Arts. He later continued his studies at New York University, getting a Master of Arts degree. Wood Harris also has a brother, Steve Harris, who is also an actor.
Acting Career
While he was still at NIU, Wood Harris got his first big movie role in the basketball drama Above the Rim (1994). In this film, he acted alongside Tupac Shakur. He also performed in many plays in New York City.
After that, Harris appeared in various TV shows and movies. In 2000, he played the famous rock guitarist Jimi Hendrix in the TV film Hendrix. Later that same year, he received awards nominations for his role as Julius "Big Ju" Campbell in the movie Remember the Titans. In this film, he played a high school football player.
One of his most recognized roles was playing Avon Barksdale in the HBO series The Wire. This show was about crime and life in Baltimore.
In 2012, Wood Harris was the narrator for the ESPN 30 for 30 film Benji. That same year, he also performed in a Broadway play called A Streetcar Named Desire.
In 2015, he joined his The Wire co-star Michael B. Jordan in the movie Creed. This film is part of the famous Rocky boxing movie series. Harris played Tony "Little Duke" Evers and has continued this role in the sequels, Creed II (2018) and Creed III (2023).
