A Look Back at Woodbine's History
Woodbine was first settled in 1845. But the first person to stay there permanently was R.C. Nelson, who arrived in 1864. The community officially started in 1876 on land owned by W.H. Mitchell, who also opened the first store.
How Woodbine Got Its Name
The community was first called Mineola by George Nelson. But in 1879, its name changed to Woodbine. This happened when the Denison and Pacific Railroad built tracks through the area. The new name came from the many woodbine vines growing there.
Railroad and Growth
Woodbine was the first place in Cooke County to get train service and a train station. This helped the community grow a lot! A post office opened in Woodbine in 1879 and stayed open until after 1930.

However, because it's close to the city of Gainesville, the population jumped to 248 in the late 1960s. By 1990, it had slightly decreased to 246.
