Woodford is a small, unincorporated community in Carter County, Oklahoma, United States. An unincorporated community means it's a place with a name but no official local government. The community has its own ZIP code, 73401. It also has its own phone system, run by the Chickasaw Telephone Company.

In the past, Woodford had its own school. However, as fewer people lived there, the school closed down. Today, students from the Woodford area go to school in nearby towns. These towns include Springer, Lone Grove, or Fox.

A special type of rock called the Woodford Shale is named after this community. This rock is important because it's a major source for oil and natural gas. It can be found in places like the Midcontinent and Permian Basin regions.

History of Woodford

How Woodford Got Its Name

The first post office in Woodford opened on February 4, 1884. At that time, this area was known as Indian Territory. The community was named after Noah L. Woodford. He was a well-known member of the Chickasaw Indian Nation.

When it was first founded, Woodford was part of Pickens County. This county was within the Chickasaw Nation.

Changes Over Time

By 1930, the number of people living in Woodford had started to go down. In 1940, a census counted 138 residents in the community.

During the 1950s, Woodford's school district closed. At least one church in the area also closed its doors. The last store in Woodford shut down in the late 1980s. Even though the community is smaller now, it still has a volunteer fire department. Woodford is even mentioned in a book called "Ghost Towns of Oklahoma."
