Springer got its name from W.A. Springer. He was a pioneer rancher and cattleman in the area. A post office opened here on September 1, 1890. At that time, Springer was located in a place called Pickens County, which was part of the Chickasaw Nation.

Springer is located in the northeastern part of Carter County. Major roads pass through or near the town. U.S. Route 77 goes right through the middle of Springer. Interstate 35 runs along the western side of the town. You can get to Springer from Interstate 35 at Exits 40 and 42.

The city of Ardmore is about 10 miles (16 km) south of Springer. Ardmore is the main city in Carter County. To the north, the town of Davis is about 14 miles (23 km) away. Springer is also located just south of the Arbuckle Mountains. These mountains are an ancient mountain range in Oklahoma.
