Woodland is a special area in the town of Baileyville, Washington County, Maine, United States. It's called a census-designated place (CDP) because the government counts its population separately. In 2010, about 952 people lived there.

History of Woodland's Name

The area we now call Woodland was first known as "Sprague's Falls." In 1906, the Postmaster General (the person in charge of mail services) changed its name to "Woodland."

Even though Woodland was a village, its post office served the whole town of Baileyville. Because of this, many people often called the entire town "Woodland."

Baileyville officially became a town in 1828. Later, a problem came up because Maine has a rule: no two towns can have the exact same name. There was another town named Woodland in Aroostook County.

In the late 1990s, the two "Woodlands" had to go to the Maine Supreme Judicial Court to solve this. Since the Woodland in Aroostook County was founded as a township first, it was allowed to keep its name. The court ordered the Woodland in Washington County to use its official, original name: Baileyville.
